Okay so I have an older 21ft CDory on my hands that has not been touched in almost ten years. Been doing a lot of work on it lately and have been putting it to good use, but there is a lot of work that needs to be done after 10 years of neglect.
One of which is a new coating of gel-coat on the outer deck area. It is about 6' by 8' roughly. I called the CDory dealer and they said to use a gallon of gel-coat mixed with sand (sand helps to provide a grip for your feet when in rough seas).
Was hoping for a little advice when it came to this, not sure how the whole gel-coat process works especially when you throw some sand into the mix.
And what kind of sand would you recommend?
I have seen some videos of guys mixing gel-coats with epoxy resin and other that don't so I am looking for some insight on this. Do I use it like paint, i.e. just buy a can and paint it on or is there a mixing process involved?
As well as the decking area I have a second job on my hands when it comes to the gel coat. The good old nicks and dings that need patching/covering up. Is this the same process as the flooring but without the sand? I don't know if you guys have done much carpentry, but is it basically like filling holes in wood with caulking? At least that what this stuff reminds me of.
I know this topic area is about hull restoration and all but I also have a 3rd problem on my hands. My trailer has rusted so badly that the front cross member on the trailer has almost disappeared. I knew that it needed replacing so I climbed under there to do some measuring and saw that it was bent into a V. The only metal left was on the top part of the box member, sides and bottom rusted away. And I have been towing it this way for almost 300 miles, pretty scary if you ask me! The box cross member (I believe it is called a tongue) is 3"x3"x66.5" long. There is a second one in the back that is not as bad but should also be replaced. My question to you guys is how much should I be looking to pay to replace these two members? Also say I get a long piece for cheaper, how hard would it be to drill the holes for the screws in 1/8" steel, and cut to proper length. I have a pretty strong drill press as well as machinery for cutting the members. Just never done anything this big/thick before.
I know it was long but thanks for reading guys
