Hey guys, first post on here so I thought I'd make it a good one. I just picked up my first real boat. Its a 1981 Malibu 16'8" center console. It has malibu stickers on it but the title says "Dixie Fiberglass Prod" so I'm not sure exactly what it is ;) anyways. I baught it for pretty cheap and was hoping there wasnt too many problems with it. I pulled the center console the other day because it had some rotten wood for the center shelf area and found that the whole deck area under the center console was soft (it was not glued in, just screwed down). Also the area under the front casting deck is pretty nasty as any moisture that gets trapped under there has nowhere to drain or dry out.

My questions are I would like to replace the soft spot on the deck under the center console and do something with the front casting deck, however I think it is just more involved then my experience level. What might I be looking at getting into with these repairs??? And any input on what I should do with the front deck? Suggestions??

Im a tinny fan for a reason. You will find out why you may like to be one after you replace all of the wooden frame. Lots o work. There are several post about how to restore it.

Welcome to iboats!

I guess the best advice I can lend you right now would be to have you do some homework and read through this thread http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=234392

You will gain a wealth of knowledge and get an idea of what's ahead ;)

To do it right, you probably need to pull/cut the casting deck and the boat floor (or deck) out and re-build them.

You really can do this if you have any construction skills at all. It's not complicated, just tedious at times and depending on how you do it, it can be expensive or very affordable.

Be sure to read through as many "floor" or "deck" replacement threads as you can so you can get a feel for different project, what materials and methods were used and you'll be on your way.

Bottom line is, if your deck is soft, it needs to be repaired. You either estimate the cost of materials and how much you value your time, then make your decision to move forward with it or get rid of the boat. Should you choose to get rid of the boat, PLEASE let potential buyers know the shape of it!

I'm sure you will be "one of us" soon enough though and be knee deep in your own rehab!!!

Good luck, Merry Christmas and keep us informed!

Signal 20,
Welcome to Iboats.
The chances of it being only the deck are slim at best. I would recommend the same thing others have, do some reading on other projects. You will find a lot of information out there.
Then do some exploring on your boat. Check the stringers and transom for sure.
If it's just the deck, well some fiberglass, plywood and time, is all you need.
Have fun

Re: Need some advice on my build/restoration

thanks everyone for the quick replies. I have been doing alot of searching on the site and I'm excited to get this project really started. So I will start it off with the first round of questions.

What is the best tool for cutting and grinding deck/fiberglass? I have seen alot of pictures of people using angle grinders and I have a nice one, however what kind of wheels are you using for the cutting and grinding?

Well it won't be nice for long..lol Fiberglass dust has a way of killing them. I used a diamond cutting blade for cutting out peices of glass and i used 3m sandblaster 36 grit flap sanding disks. Which did i really good job at grinding out the old glass

I have heard that putting a woman's stocking over the grinder will prolong the life of the grinder, helping keep some of the fiberglass dust out of it...

Most people prefer angle grinder with various cutting blades. I prefer the Toe Kick saw. I found it extremely useful, and quick. I have posted pic's of it on several threads or you can go to my photo bucket in my signature block and see a pic. You can get them at HF.
Good luck with you rebuild, I will look forward to seeing your progress.
