Need Some Advice on Smoothing Surface

Ok this kind of sucks and I'm glad my wife will not read it. But she spray painted some lawn furniture in the garage right in between the boat and my 95 Volvo 850 T5R. Guess what? The finish on the car and the boat now feels rough. So I go overspray on my boat and car. Her car is fine cause she pulled it out to paint the furniture.

It's not noticable to sight at all, but you can feel it. I tried boat polish and that did next to nothing. I then got some polishing compound and did a small section. That area is better, but still perfectly smooth like it was. I was hoping to not have to use rubbing compound. Can anybody think of a better solution?

The surface was just waxed about two months ago, so it was very smooth and shiny. Actually it is still shiny, but not smooth.

On paint and glass, you can use clay bar. The clay bar will easily remove the over-spray and make the paint feel like new again.

** I have never tried it on gel coat before, so you might want to test it on the bottom or somewhere to make sure it won't scratch or harm the finish.

Strip off the wax and reapply it. With luck that will get rid of the overspray. If it's rough when you've stripped the wax then you could try a clay bar.

Edit:
642 types faster than me. A clay bar is usually good on gel coat.

Wow a clay bar, I should have thought of that. Sure glad I posted the question. I used on on my Envoy when I bought it and it worked fine and was much easier than polishing compound.

THANKS!

Why are you glad she's not reading the post?

4 1/2" Angle grinder with a concrete grinding blade will strip it to the bone...

Now that the wife is done, I would go with a clay bar and Maquiers wax on the boat...:D

Wife says she will never ever paint anything again. I didn't argue with her. I really didn't say much to her. I think that quiet anger gets to her as much as anything. Feel like ringing her neck though. She said she was careful. I said did you cover the boat and the car? NO. Then you were not careful.

By the way the lawn furniture looks very nice though.

Clay bar will work on gelcoat too as it pulls stuff off of the paint.
Like making silly putty copies off of the Sunday comics.
(geez I bet half of the forum does not know what the "Sunday comics" are and the other half does not know what Silly Putty is either, I am getting too old.)

Your not using it to scrub with.

Tell her: "If you let me do the sprayin', I'll let you do the cookin'! " Watch for flying fry pans. ;-)

Luckily, an honest accident and easy fix. The clay bar and lightly soapy water should wipe it right off, especially if there was a coat of wax on the surfaces.

OK, so I'm into boats and older Volvos (I have 5 if you count the twin Volvos in the boat).

Let us know how the Volvo turns out. 850 T5R is kinda rare. For sale? Overspray OK. :D

Re: Need Some Advice on Smoothing Surface

Been married to her for 33 years now, so I guess she knows she can get away with it once.

My Volvo is a yellow 95 T5R, one of 185 imported into the USA. Very cool car and an every day driver with 187K on it. Wife drives and 97 850 R in white with charcoal interior. It has 217K on it and runs great, but needs a muffler. My son has two 98 Volvo, a V70R and an S70 T5 5 speed. We've had a total of 12 Volvos in our family.

Eventually I will have a V8 Volvo XC90 to tow my boat. Just don't have the money right now, but the 07's are starting to come down to where I can start looking for one.
