I purchased a pontoon a couple of years ago.. it came with 2 motors.. one was a 55 hp johnson and the other was a 4 stroke mid 90's 90hp merc. The prevous owner said the merc has not seen the water in the last 4 years but ran great when it was ont the boat just consumed a lot of fuel .. The motor is all there with tilt and trim and throttle and we have all the covers... The only problem is that since it has been sitting some of the electrical wires have rotted out and of coarse some mice have had a heck of a time playng on it.. we are wanting to sell it and not sure on a price we should start at... is there any where that might buy a used motor that doesnt run we live about 20 mile east of indianapolis Indiana
thanks

I'm sure you realize that a verifiable good running engine would yield you a lot more money. You didn't state what year these motors were or how damaged the 90HP was either. Anybody coming to see it will have a very hard time wondering what could be wrong with that OB and therefore will certainly low-ball their offering for sure. And you really can't blame them either. Put yourself in any buyer's position, would you offer a lot of money per the seller's opinions? So either repair it and sell it as running and verifiable or take a huge hit on the price... And that price is up in the air because we can't actually see what it looks like or the year it was built! JMHO!

$500 tops not running. You have to assume a bad powerhead and the rest is the value of what parts can be salvaged. People don't even know if the lower unit is usable. I recently bought a 2003 merc 90 elpto complete with controls for $300 on CL because I checked compression while looking at it and it had bad compression on cyl #2. I made the offer and the owner said just get it out of here because nobody would even make an offer on it not running.
