1995 yamaha 200 txrt saltwater series. recentley purchased. when i start to crank it i turn the key and there is a 1 or 2 second delay before the starter spins but then it cranks fine. the problem is when i have to turn it over for more than a few seconds the ground cable gets extremely hot--enough to start smoking. should i just replace the starter or is there something else i should look at first? starter is about $375. i also have some oil injection issues i want to talk to you about later. one problem at a time. any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, rodbolt, or any one else. jlw1972

Smoking/hot battery cables are generally the sign of poor connections due to corrosion or simply being loose. Disconnect both ends, make the terminals shiny clean and tighten them securely.

you could also loosen the starter and check for corrosion between it and block

appear to be clean can be misleading. Corrosion can eat away at the innards and it can appear to be OK, but be rotten in the middle. The starter could be bad,are the battery cables of sufficient guage, is there a switch for more than one battery? Check ground connection at the engine, not just the battery? Starter is probably toast, pulling too much of a load. I would check all of the above, that's free, then replace the starter.

but what do I know....

like it weas said, smoking hot terminals are normally an indication of poor connections, loose connections or internal cable corrosion.
if its a salt water use motor check that the drive shaft busing has clamped down on the drive shaft. this bushing is located in the mid section just above the water pump.
only the two stroke X and U models use this bushing but all the larger 4 strokes use it.
after all that is checked then look at the starter.
use the volt drop test as described in this forum. a forum search will find it for you.
