HOW are you ?
Well i have a 40hp johnson modle rds-26s serial # c397061
I was woundering if and how i could replace the old close line steering systeam with a rack or tube systeam or would the cost be worth the bother?
Mybe a used steering systeam if any one has a line on one.

The other q is i have not owened the boat for two long but i am learnig fast about up keep on the motor i have doubt about the prev owner mantanice skill so i am replacing a few things for my peace of mined but i have noticed a leak at the very bottom of the motor were the forward and reverse gear are around the screwesthat connect the halfs of the unit together. do i have to drop the lower unit to see if the gaskethas give out or can i just unscrew those bolt's with a robertson head and check the gasket that way or would i screw up the forword and rev and mybe pinion gear
any help at all would be gladly recived take care

1) you can just replace the clothes line with more clothes line or you can get the teleflex tube type steering rod. They are not expensive used.

2) if you are leaking at the skeg joint you can remove it (and they are phillips screws - you must be Canadian!). It is tricky to do when the engine is upright but possible. What you should do is to drop the lower unit and change the impeller anyway if it has not been done recently. Then you can invert the LU and take the skeg off nicely. Make sure you drain it first though.

There is nothing wrong with a properly installed and maintained cable and pulley system. However, if you convert it to push-pull cable you will regret it. It is extremely difficult to get it installed to where the motor will full tilt without something bending or breaking. And when you do, you will find that the steering arc will be severely limited and docking and manuvering will be a real pain. Don't think you don't need full tilt. The first time you hit an underwater object and the motor comes kicking up you will find that you do need full tilt capability as you replace whatever broke.

My advice is keep what you have and repair it if it needs it. Of course my advice is often rejected.
