I have a 70 Slickcraft with a Mercruiser 165. Today, we took the boat out for a while and the engine began ticking (like low or no oil). The level was fine, but wondering if the engine was overheating?? The temp gauge didn't indicate it tho'.
So, my question is; where does the cooling water discharge at on the outdrive? A visual indication would show that the pump(s) are working...right?

My second question is, why won't my outdrive raise very high when I push the "Up" & "Up/Out" buttons? I hear the pump running and the drive will raise to a point and stop. I hear no change in the sound of the pump motor as I would expect when it raises to the upper most position.

Pretty obvious that I am a newbie to the sterndrive units.....

Thanks!

1) Through the prop & the two exhaust relief ports on the gimbal housing......
2) Have you checked the oil level in the trim pump located on the stern port side?........

I haven't yet checked the oil level in the trim pump tank yet. I did consider it, but haven't gotten there yet.

Thanks again my friend.

OK, as far as the trim issue, the level was low...ummm...way low! I filled it to the bottom the threads in the filler hole and now it works fine.

As far as the suspected heating concern, I hooked up the muffs and turned on the water. After starting the engine, I saw the stream coming through the center of the prop but no where else. I let it get to the green on my gauge and felt around the outdrive. I could feel cool up towards the top and midway it was a little warm...but not hot. The engine manifold was warm but I could leave my hand on it with no discomfort. The riser was the same way.
So, with that, it is safe to believe that the pumps are working ok? I know it's not a high tech way to troubleshoot.

Thanks for the help folks!
