i know there is a lot of disagreement on the force brand and its quality. im looking at snagging a project boat for cheap and it has a running 5 cylinder 150hp force on the back. i have heard so many mixed felling about force but i own a 4 cylinder 125hp right now with no issues. the model number of this 150hp that im looking at is 1501x92a, and the serial number is 61205. im wondering of feedback of the design, quality of this particular motor. also, was this a merc force or still a chysler force motor? any info would be REALLY appreciated.

TIA

Re: need some feedback on this force outboard

Force engines developed a reputation as unreliable during the 1990's. Most of the problems trace back to mercury reeds and stators. The Chrysler engineered designs do not have a reputation for breaking. The chrysler reed blocks can usually be bolted on as a replacement for mercury reed blocks and eliminate the lean running self-destructing problem.

Look up the parts diagram for the engine in question and find the reed valves. see if they are chrysler or mercury design reed blocks. The Chrysler designed reed is F530160. It was used on everything from a 1980 70HP through a 1991 150HP. I think the change to mercury came mid-year 1992???

Near as I can figure Chryser 150s were 72-75 96.55 cube 4 cylinder, and likely white.
76 was 99.8 cubes 4 cyl.It appears the Force was 89-94 5 cylinder.124cubes.
My info may be incomplete. As you probably know Chrysler became Force in 85.
While this isn't really a repair issue I think you would get better Force specific info in the Chrysler/Force section.

Re: need some feedback on this force outboard

I never really liked the 5 cylinder Force 150 until my friend acquired one. Based on his engine, I would have to say that if you get one in running condition for a good price, you WILL be satisfied. It does make the 4 cylinder Chrysler and Force engines look sick. That Force IS a Brunswick built engine built during the time that Mercury owned them but is NOT Mercury designed. Merc did not change midlegs and lower units to Merc design until after 1994. Although it is 5 cylinders it does use the same design, pistons, rods, and ignition system as the other Force engines. The midsection, tilt/trim, and lower unit is the same design and quite possibly the same parts as those for the mid 90s and earlier 85, 90, 120, 125.
