I have a 1971 20hp Chrysler Outboard that has been running great. I let it sit for a few weeks and now it will crank and wont stay running. I took the carb off and cleaned it good, put it back on and get the same result. However it will run if you constantly pump the bulb. So I ordered a fuel pump kit and put it in and still get the same results. Cranks good but goes dead unless I pump the bulb. I have not checked the compression yet. What do I need to do?

Re: Need some Fuel pump help!

Until the 20 HP experience gets here, have you gone over it good Xs basics? In this case I would look for connections etc that could be sucking air, fuel restrictions and bad fuel.

1. Check you fuel tank quick coupling?s O-ring for wear that would allow a bad connection to suck air.

2. Dump and check your fuel and tank for any signs of trash etc that could cause restrictions.

3. Add a clear fuel filter between the fuel tank and fuel pump, closer to the pump to catch rubber/etc..

4. Check the fuel pump and carb?s bowls for signs of debris from gasohol deterioration?s/etc.

5. Do you treat your fuel with StaBil etc or use fresh fuel every 30 days?

What Did I Miss??

Very likely sucking in air somewhere, but the primer bulb is able to overcome the leak with shear volume if you squeeze fast enough.

I had a very small crack in the fitting of a plastic fuel tank, that would suck air, just enough that it would eventually kill the engine.
I was able to pump it manually and keep it running for a while.
But after about 20 minutes, no go.

I cut the hose from the fitting and just stuck it in the top of the fuel tank to get back to the dock that day.
