Hello all. I have a 2007 Mercury Classic 50 3 cyl 2 stroke. I believe my control box has the leads for a tachometer hook up. Is there any particular tach I need to use with a 3 cyl 2 stroke and if so, can I get some recommendations on a budget friendly gauge? Thanks everyone for any help you can send my way.

Tachometers for outboards are pretty universal. They are not like car tachometers in that they are not dependent on the number of cylinders and engine has but rather the number of pulses coming from the charging system. An engine with a 12 POLE alternator produces 6 PULSES per revolution which is what the tach counts. There are settings on the back of the tach for various pulse settings. Click the SHOP button at the top of this page. IBoats has what you need.

Gee, how is a 3 cylinder 50HP Merc a "classic"? They were always 4 cylinder.

Sorry, it's marketing, I should know better....

Faria instruments are inexpensive and easy to install. As Silvertip says, you adjust the settings on the back of the tach according to the stator setup. I recently switched from a V4 Johnson to a V6 Merc yet my tach setting didn't require changing; the pole count must be the same in both engines. Your control box will have a short cord with a plug for connection to an instrument wiring harness. You'll need to contact a Merc dealer to get that harness as they are specific to your engine. Then it's a simple three wire connection to the tach, one for signal, one for power from the ignition switch, one for ground. If you wish, you can add a fourth wire to power instrument lighting.
