yesterday i finally got to take the boat out for the first time this year. its was in the the shop for the last two weeks to get the trim cylinder leak fixed and the mechanic ran the engine and made sure everything was good to go. i had already changed all the fluids, filters and everything else that i normally do in the spring.

we launched and everything was fine for about the first half hour. i was just cruising along at about 25 mph and decided to open it up and took it to about 43 mph. after about 30 seconds the engine stumbled for a second so i slowed down to about 20 mph and everything seemed fine, after a few minutes the kids wanted to do some fishing so went over to an anchorage area to sit for awhile and let the kids catch some mackeral. as soon as i dropped the engine to idle it died. after several minutes of trying to start it fired up and went to about 1800 rpms and then died again. i could not figure out what was going on so i said lets do some fishing and i'll mess with it in awhile. i opened up the engine bay and started looking around for loose or chaffed wires and found nothing out of the ordinary. when we went to leave the engine fired up and went to 1800 rpm again then dropped down to about 750 rpm. i was like ok, so we start going about our way i speed up to 25 mph and after about a minute the engine started stumbling and eventually died. several minutes later it fired up went to 1800 rpm and back to 750 rpm so i set the tach to 1750-1800 rpm and we slowly made our way back to the ramp.

when i got the boat home i pulled the fuel filter and found no water in it.the filter was brand new maybe had 30 mins. of run time between me and the mechanic before we took the boat out. i put on a new fuel filter and when i started the engine it would go to 1800 rpm then die. after 6-7 tries it would finally idle. i plan on calling the shop on monday and get them to look at it unless i can figure something out. right now i'm lost.

the engine is a volvo 5.7gsi and when i put the boat away last fall i added stabilizer and filled the tank. anyone help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

If the engine now runs ok, might want to put it back in the water and try this test.

If it still has the problem on the trailer, you could try the same test, or even hook up a outboard tank to the engine fuel filter to eliminate the boats fuel system and see if it will start and run normal.

Of course you really need some fuel pump pressure readings to troubleshoot further, along with a scan tool and the manuals.

Re: need some help. possible fuel problem?

thanks for the help, after replacing the filter it still would rev up to 1800 and then stall several times before it would idle. when i changed the fuel filter before it went into the shop it started right up with no problem on the muffs.
as far as the link you provided. i would love to dive into this thing but this fuel system setup is alittle to much for me.

i'm going to call the shop tomorrow and take it to them. i'll update ya on what they find. thanks again

well i picked the boat up from the shop. it was the anti-syphon valve that was the problem. it was almost stuck closed. it's good to go now. thanks don for the reply.
