I'm pulling a 5.0 chev out of an old celebrity with an omc drive and don't have the books and also no experience with omc i/o's. the question is; what do you have to do to get the motor out. I don't need the basics just what comes with the motor as far as bellhousing assembly. does it come out like a mercruiser, or do you unbolt the bell and leave it in the boat? we're doing this now and would appreciate an answer before i break out the hammer, torch and prybar. thanks in advance.

well, i guess i'll hook up the forklift and just shake it until it falls out, then i'll just replace whatever breaks. Sounds like a plan. lol

Ayuh,...

You can unbolt it at the motor's bellhousing, as you would a car,....
The shaft is only an inch or so long....

I can't remeber whether the outdrive will have a notion to Fall out the back of the boat when you break the motor Free though,..??
Can't remember the exact placement of the rear mounts.....

Re: need some help quick..stupid question

there's rear mounts for the outdrive right at the bellhousing that go into the stringer to support the outdrive; it shouldn't fall out, i don't think. we're working at separating the engine from the bell and we'vegot about a 16th inch, but she don't wanna separate. maybe the splines are twisted? i dont know if that's possible on an omc. still working and i still keep coming in and checking the laptop for any ideas, so keep them coming. you all know i don't normally type like this, but my hands are greasy and im in a hurry tonight. thanks again.

You might want to try supporting the lower part of the drive.
when you seperate the bell and motor there might be a bind
becouse the support bolts you see I believe are only 2.
I think the drive will want to lower and bind it at the coupler

Motor will have to go forward 6 inchs and straight up after the flywheel cover is removed or won't move, 6 screws hold the flywheel cover.

Re: need some help quick..stupid question

there is no flywheel cover at all on the bottom half. all the bell housing bolts are out. the damn thing feels like the splines between the flywheel and the driveshaft are welded together. anybody have a good idea of how exactly the engine is connected to the driveshaft?

I am no expert by far but if you think about it this is what I believe.
The intermediate housing is bolted to the stringer of the boat with 2 bolts ,one on each side on a foot support.
when you unbolt the bellhousing from the engine you loose the support keeping them aligned. The weight of the lower unit is pulling down causing the bell to angel back and go into a bind.
I have a 22' Skiff Craft 305 with a 800 stringer, thats what it looks like to me.
Try supporting the lower outdrive up alittle and see if it comes apart.

Good luck

OH YA
An apprenticeship teacher told us a long time ago that the only stupid question is the one you don't ask.
Where all in this together!

The only thing i can think of is pull the drive and pull the ball gear shaft. That shaft must be rusted solid in the coupler. The shaft splines go into the coupler splines.

It's a solid coupler no rubber on it. And i am surprised there is no fly wheel cover.

Re: need some help quick..stupid question

Something must be going on. We couldn't budge that son of a gun. Never got it out last night, couldn't even move the engine off the bell more than a 16th inch. I think we needed better prybars. I'll take some of mine home from work with me. I'm a full-time mechanic, he's a competent amateur and we were using his tools, which his prybars weren't suited to the job. His propane forklift is nice though. lol. I agree that the splines must be bound up somehow. the problem is that while I have r&r'd many mercruisers, the only omc experience I have is with their outboards and none at all with the I/O's. so this is something new and I don't know what problems omc's have as far as what corrodes or seizes, or if the splines could twist, etc. I'm gonna learn though, lol Any more thoughts are greatly appreciated. thanks again

I shoulda known you'd join up. lol That's alright. at least you can follow what's going on and I don't have to report everything back to you. Don't worry you're still fun to work with.

I must be getting bipolar or something, GREAT the motor runs, but it's @#$%&*! junk anyway. :D  In the immortal words of Charlie Brown.....Good Grief and AAAAAGGGGGHHHH
I'll fool with that other stuff at lunch and get back to you
