I am trying to help a fellow iBoats mbr sort through their Ign System issues. While the engine did run in his new to him boat, it would not a little later. Troubleshooting led to a no spark situation and a really nasty looking dizzy under the cap. So that has been replaced (entire distributor unit) but still no spark.
I am well familiar with point type ign systems but not this system, wiring diagram below from a Mercruiser which I understand is the same.
The help needed is how to properly trouble shoot this. Specifically looking for what each of the wires does. For the 4 wires going to the coil are 2 of them power and gnd and the other two a ‘triggering’ signal or just what? And how about the 5 going to the dizzy?
In brief I am looking to understand that with a Multimeter in hand what should I look for on these wires?
Any help, guidance, or explanation of how this system works electrically is appreciated. Thanks.
