Hi,
I am glad I have found this website! I have done a little reading and it seems to be a wealth of information! I have been looking for a project boat for a few months now, but have not been having much luck. I found an Islander hull I have another thread about, but ran into problems trying to purchase it. I like that boat a lot, but am open to other options as well. Recently, I was looking at a Chris Craft Sea Hawk 21' cuddy cabin. A few things I liked about it was the deep V and the flare in the front. I imagine it helps direct water away from the cabin. It looked good in craigslist, but after I saw it a few red flags went up. The first thing I noticed, and probably the biggest issue was the obvious repair done to the hull at one of the flares. There is an area about 2 feet long and a foot high that you can see was patched and a different color gel coat was used to patch it. When I examined it closely, I could see some type of indented line in the center of the repair, but it was hard to make out. I guess they must have hit something and had it patched? There was an inspection port right there, and I could kind of look in and see there was a piece of wood put in the hull and glassed over. The owner says it was that way when he bought the boat. Also, there were two repairs in the gel coat at the rear of the boat between the waterline and a rub rail. Above the rub rail, the gel coat is cracked pretty badly at the rear corners. Also, around the vents are cracked too. Some of the cracks were large enough I could make out the fiberglass inside. I wasn't sure what would be causing this kind of cracking, but now I am thinking this may be an indication of a bad transom? I assume the cracks come from the hull flexing, and why else would it flex there? The other problem I noticed was the engine. It started right up and ran fine, but it was a merc. 190. I read this is also known as the 470 and I should avoid it. It had 800 hours on it, but ran well. (well in the yard on muffs) Other than that, the boat wasn't too bad. It looked like it spent some time outside, and the bottom paint wasn't in good shape. He had some new cushions for it, and everything seemed to work ok. (Trim, radio, fish finder, ect.) It was sitting on a year 2000 tandem axle roller trailer that wasn't bad. One of the plastic fenders was cracked but that was the only problem I saw with it. I imagine the damage to the hull should be all I need to see, but I am trying to learn what to look for with a used boat. The cracks in the gelcoat im sure can be sanded out and patched, but it has to lead me to believe there is an underlying problem there as well. The hull its self anywhere near the waterline looked fine, however. It was just cracked at the top above the rub rail mainly. I thank you guys for bearing with me and helping me with my questions! I want to buy a boat that will not be dangerous, and something I can get parts for and make reliable. I am pretty sure this boat isn't the one for me, but I do like it's design. It seems like it would be fine in bigger water and had a fair about of fishing room all around. I attached pictures because they say more than all of this rambling! Any input is appreciated!

I thank you for bearing with me. The more I learn the better prepared I will be when the right boat decides to come along. The total asking price is 2200, with the trailer.

Re: Need some help with picking a boat...

welcome,

i'm not going to tell you which boat to buy but don't get in over your head if you don't know much about boats. its not like buying an older car that you can just fix up here and there and keep on the road. boats take A LOT of work to maintain... more than you would ever imagine for the older ones especially.

think about what you want to do with the boat. from the pictures, you obviously aren't going to go bass fishing with that boat... maybe you dont want to but keep in mind that every boat is designed for a specific purpose.

there are multiple threads concerning "what to look for when buying a used boat" in this forum, just use the search feature. i would love to tell you but i am no expert at it so i will keep to myself.

good luck and i hope you find a perfect match for you.

Re: Need some help with picking a boat...

Hi,
I guess I should have been a little more specific with how I was asking my questions. I am looking for a good bay boat, with maybe a few offshore days. (Close to shore, fishing wrecks mostly) I also want to be able to use it in the Susquehanna river which is 10 miles from my house. It's a big river down here, and there are boats in it that would make this one look small at times. The only bass I would be fishing for out of it would be the striped ones!

Im trying to upgrade from my 14' springbok v hull. It's a great little boat, but not when the swells are 3 feet. the 9.8 merc just doesn't cut it with more than 2 people on the boat. It goes ok, but never gets on plane. There are 5 in my family I would like to take out once and a while for fishing, and groups of four or five guys to fish in the bays. I will keep the springbok, but just for small lakes and such.

I don't know how I should feel about the cracked Gel coat and fiberglass repair. I can look through some of the cracks and see the fiberglass inside. I don't see how water wouldn't get in there. I don't think there is any delamination in the fiberglass, but am far from an expert on the subject. I was thinking maybe the fiberglass swelled and caused the cracking? Now that I think about it, I don't think that is an issue at all, and it did sound solid when I banged on it. I have been doing a lot of reading, and it seems rot is the main concern of a hull that gets waterlogged. I don't think this boat is waterlogged, and if what I have been reading is correct, the boat shouldn't have wooden stringers or floor to worry about. Just the transom. With the cracks mostly around the rear, it made me worry the transom is soft, or getting there. I did my best to inspect it, and it seemed fine. But once again I am no expert and cannot be sure.

The repair on the top of the hull also has me a little worried. It seems fiberglass can be fixed easy enough, and it looks like a professional job. I guess I can always get to the patch on the inside, and layer it up with new glass to be 110% sure it is solid. I have never worked with fiberglass so a task like this has me worried. Fiberglass is a skill I want to learn, however.

The motor doesn't worry me too much. I am good at working on engines, and it seems that with a good manual working on the outdrive shouldn't be much of an issue. But then again, I could be wrong.

I am just trying to decide if this would be a boat worth pursuing, or a headache and moneypit that needs more wrench time than fishing time. I am not afraid to put time into it, but I would like if it was at least kind of reliable. I am very particular about maintance on my truck, and I am sure a boat will be the same. I thank you for your time!

Walk around cuddies like that Chris Craft are very suitable for what you want to do. A WAC is generally a variation on the manufacturer's center console fishing/offshore models. Same hull with a different 'cap' on it. My 21' Pro-Line WAC with 175 hp Johnson outboard was well suited to bay and 'light' offshore use on nice days.

I'd walk on the Chris Craft. Too many negatives (the 470 Merc) and questionable repairs. There are tons of WAC's around. Keep looking and have fun! I love boat shopping....

I'd run from that one. If the hull was in great shape I may put up with the 470. If the motor was awesome I may put up with the repaired hull, but both together? Not a chance.

Make sure you're checking Baltimore's craigslist if you're looking for that type of hull.
