Its either a '60's or '70's motor.. buddy was throwing it out because the electronic shift didnt work. Bottom end looks like new, and the rest of the motor looks like new, but there was some surface corrosion on the block/various other mounting peices, and the flywheel/flywheel cover is a bit rusty...

Just looking for any info i can possibly get on this beast of a motor, that thing is friggin heavy, i could barely lift it into the truck.

Anyways, I am looking forward to rebuilding the electronic shift that is bad, (possibly just chewed through wires since there were mice living in the motor cover) and hopefully the powerhead itself doesnt need much work.

I am ASE master certified in automotive, and also certified in small engines, and worked a couple years rebuilding jet-ski motors. I realise these are quite a bit different, and if it is worth fixing this motor, im gonna get a service manual.

Also, about how much would one of these go for in working condition, and in not working condition? I was told by the previous owner that the bottom end was rebuilt 3 years ago, and like i said, with the cover on, the motor looks beautiful. theres just a bit of corrosion on the motor.

Thanks,
Jason

That electric shift 90 was only built in 1964 and '65. It was not one of OMC's best runners. It suffered from fuel problems, mostly from the carb design. The '66 and later 100hp was a lot better motor with a redesigned carb and the bigger gearcase.

Money wise, depending on your part of the country, probably around $200-300 for that 38 year old motor.

Thanks, I think im gonna rebuild it this winter, and get a cheap hull next spring. I got it for free, so even if i cant get it running, its no big deal. I was told it ran great, but i noticed the distributer belt was chewed up pretty badly.

Now i just need to figure out how this electronic shifting works. Im guessing its just chewed wires from the mice. he said it was a dead short to ground.

I was hoping i could get a bit more for it, but if not, i will just tinker with it, and learn about them more.

I was planning on buying a nice late 80's 16-21ft boat in the spring. so i was gonna try selling it for a little bit towards a boat. I have much experience in larger boats, as my uncle owns a 73' yatch as a company boat (he owns an oil company) and a 25' along with a 17' tunnel hull, so my family is not new to boating, just thought it would be nice to own my own boat.

Oh, i live in Michigan by the way, in flint during the winter, and in northwestern michigan (near traverse city) during the summer.

anyways, sorry about the long rambling post, and thanks for the info,

Jason

yeah, im gonna try and find a manual for it, dont want to go spending $100 on a book though when the motor was free.

Like i said, ive worked rebuilding jet ski motors and troubleshooting them, and am also a master certified auto mechanic. still havent gotten a steady job in those feilds though (im 21 going through college, so you know what thats like)

If worse came to worse, i was just gonna pull the bottom end off and sell that since it is very near mint condition, the paint isnt even worn off the skeg and the previous owner says the bottom end is a remanufactured unit that is three years old, and has only been in the water once since it was put on the motor.

so i was gonna sell the bottom end if i could, and tinker with the power head.
