I purchased a 1981 40 hp OMC Army surplus outboard. It runs great but I want to convert it to a "civilian" Johnson or Evinrude. I am looking for pictures, paint schemes, decals (and locations), etc. for an early 80's model. Can anyone help? I am patriot and all that but serial numbers stenciled on both sides over olive drab just aren't my style.

Thanks!

Re: Need some pictures

Thanks for the reply. I have been watching e bay posts to see if someone is selling something of this vintage.

I would be interested in anything you can supply. I am especially interested in hood shots. I would think the paint and decal scheme would be very similar.

Again, thanks!

Re: Need some pictures

I looked through all my photos and don't have any close ups of my motor, when it warms up a little (check the snow cam link) in a couple days i'll snap some photos for you. Its not a very pretty motor , all white with a red/orange and black stripe and johnson.

Thanks - the last photo is the best and the scheme I think I will go with. I could not get the second link to work.

You have been a great help.

Re: Need some pictures

I found someone to make decals. On the decal on the front and back of the cover, there appears to be some wording above the hp number. Do you know what that wording might be? I would like to get this as exact as possible.

Thanks!

If I am not mistaken, that wording you are talking about is "Seahorse". This is the era that Johnson put out the seahorse line of engines.

Johnson did not make a 40 hp in 1981 for the consumer market. Prior to that year, one was last made in 1976, then a different design 40 came out in 1983.

What is the model number on your military engine?

Re: Need some pictures

It's an AM40A, seahorse. I responded to a post a while back for him here. I hope you have some better information.

calndrmn - I tried to respond to your email, but I've had some trouble on my end, and the email went away. I'm afraid I wasn't much help anyway since I don't know a lot about post 60's Johnsons.

Re: Need some pictures

I guess it won't matter what the wording will be since the cosmetics will not be "politically correct" if Johnson did not make a civilian 40 hp in 1981. I will go ahead and paint it Johnson white and get the decals to look like there was a civilian model in 1081. No one will ever know the difference. I just want to paint over the olive drab and stenciled serial numbers down the sides.

I did find out from Twin City Outboard that the block is from a commercial line they offered starting in the 70's. I was trying to get all the parts for an electrical starter. I was told the flywheel I need is very, very rare with a $350 price tag. The starter is almost as rare and they had no used units. So will hold off on that part of the restoration for now.

Thanks for the information.
