Hey guys, I have posted another thread in the engine forum stating that I am having a problem getting my boat on plane with a heavy load at the higher altitude lakes. The general concensus is that I need a different prop so I am hoping I can get some insight here. So, here is what I have:

#1. Drive - 1998 4.3L EFI Merc Alpha 1
#2. Current prop - Merc. Vengence SS # 48 16316A45 19P
#3. Current RPM - 4850
#4. Hull - 1998 Sea Ray Sig 190 fiberglass
#5. Jack plate - not sure what that is.
#6. No tabs/foils
#7. General uses - The prop I use now works great for sea level uses. I am looking for another prop for use at higher altitude lakes (4800' MSL). I normally have a full load of people and like to wakeboard. I would like something that will pull a boarder out of the water easily and gets on plane quickly when cruising. Top speed isn't a huge issue but I would like 35-40 mph if possible.

Thanks for any insight, advice, or recomendations you have.

-Beer

I figure about an inch less pitch for every 1500ft MSL. (to understand MSL vs. AGL, I'll assume you're a pilot?)
I would highly recommend you take a serious look at smart-tabs as well.

Yeah. It's habit, sorry. However, I assure you, I only love beer when I am not working. :)

So those numbers on my current prop, what do they mean? Is the 19P mean pitch? Isn't pitch measured in degrees not inches? If not, what is an inch of pitch? I was looking at the Merc prop finder and it says you need to know the outdrive gear ratio. Where can I find that out?

I'm so boat stupid.

Yes, the 19P is pitch, and yes, it's measured in inches...we measure Rake in degrees.
The 48- indicates Merc, and the rest of the numbers are style and what it fits.
I punched some numbers on Merc's new prop selector, and it says you should be in the 17P range with some 16's listed.
Are you sure about the tach and what is your top-speed and is it by GPS or other means?

Thanks for the info Kenny. I have not ran my boat with a GPS yet but I will this weekend and I'll get back with some more solid numbers. Thanks for your patience.

BTW, you must also be a pilot, no?

Hey guys,

I took the boat out with the GPS and here is what I got:

1) 3 people in boat
2) Elevation 937'

46.8 MPH @ WOT. WOT = 4920 rpm (on timing gun). Manufacturer WOT recomendation is 4400-4800.

I had a feeling my tach was off so I used my timing gun and sure enough they differed by 200 rpm +-. My tach seems to be ok from about idle to 900 rpm and then it starts to read low. Any ideas?

Thanks

What do you think Kenny? Looks like I am exceeding the WOT range with a 19. Will 100 rpm damage the motor? I am thinking a 17 pitch for my high altitude prop. Any ideas?

Thanks

100 won't cause any issues, and yea, I think a 17 would be a good choice for 4800 based on what the 19 is doing at 900+.
