I believe the have an 888, not a 188. In any case I have the same issue as you do, having the Prestolite starter which is NLA. They used 2 different starter models on the 233/888 engines which have separate starter solonoids. One was the Prestolite, the other was the Delco Remy I believe. You can find the Delco Remy fairly easily (eBay, etc) for around $150 or so. Should bolt up the same.

Most all of those are of the Delco-Remy design you can view in the Merc service manual. The mechanism which engages the starter is a bit different than the prestolite, but it functions the same and is wired the same way. The presolite is all encompassed in one housing, the Delco-Remy design has the metal cover w/band clamp around it. I believe the Delco unit has some sort of armature under that metal access plate which engages the bendix, but I'm not for certain. Either way it's the only option for the SBF's so the point is moot.

Re: need starter for 77 188 motor

Ok guys ive got the starter situation under control, thanks for all the help everyone.Ok now i have a new situation my outdrive is off the boat, and i checked the outdrive fluid and it looked perfect,my question is ive never had one all the way off and my prop spins one direction with a little play cockwise, when i try to spin counterclockwise it clicks and sometimes just stops. If you go clockwise again and then turn it counterclockwise it will spin while clicking, sometimes for as long as you want to turn it, other times it stops.I am not using alot of pressure but im thinking maybe a gear has a bad spot in it any thoughts on this.(or is this something normal)

Just my .02, but when my starter went out I was able to take it to a local place that builds starters and alternators. I would search your local area and see if you have something similar, you probably do and dont even know it. They do top quality work right here in the good ol U.S of A. When I got it back it was BRAND NEW, they even blast the casing down and re-spray it. You are supporting local business and getting a better starter than you would get if you bought a remanufactured one (el Mexico product). Like I said, just my .02
