Hi guys!

this is my first post in this forum, and its due to some problem with my insurance company...

I own a 1991 Renken cuddy Classic 2000 (see pics below) equipped with a Johnsson 150Hp two stroke V6 engine from 1994.
According to my insurance comany the boat is allowed to carry not more than a 125 hp engine, making the 150Hp V6 too big to insure on this boat.

They ask me to find the identity plate inside the boat where its normally stated how many passengers the boat was designed for, maximum horsepower allowed in the rear, and weight of the boat without engine mounted.

However i can not find any such plate, I do find the identity number on a plate behind the rear sofa, and also on the outside of the boat in the rear end.

As i understand, the Renken boating company no longer exist, but is there any way to get hold of someone with a good expertice and knowledge about this kind of boat? I bought the boat a few days ago, and its imported from the US to me here in Sweden.

The ones i can find on the internet seem to be inboard engined of this model, mine is outboard.

I would apreciate your help on this one, i really love the boat and must find a way to get it in the water insured and ready to run.

Thanks a lot guys!

Re: Need technical information about my Renken Cuddy Classic

Nice boat....sorry I cant help but hopefully somebody with the same boat still has the capacity sticker still legible.....they often fade and cant be read even if they are still on there.

How does your insurance company come up with the 125 hp rating? maybe you could counter and ask them to prove how they came up with that number.

150 hp on a 20' boat does not sound unreasonable, mines rated for 235 and its 20'.

Good luck

nadaguides.com rate your boat at 130 hp........ your insurance company is basically right.

That capacity plate is normally right near the helm somewhere. Most of the time very close to your shift / throttle control.

The other numbers you found sound like the Hull Identifaction Numbers.

Good luck getting this all figured out and on the water soon!

Wow that's really strange. A 20' cuddy should be able to take a 150+ no problem.

Re: Need technical information about my Renken Cuddy Classic

Some updates...

I searched the web until my fingers bled today and finally found some info, and it was right here on iboats.com :)

It says that the 1991 Renken 2000 Classic, and also Cuddy (dont really know which one is mine, but i guess the most heavy one is the right one), and it said that maximum horsepower was 175hp.

I copied this text and emailed the insurance agent with this information and some pics of my boat.

Ten minutes later a boat specialist from the insurance company called me up and asked about length and weight and make, he agreed that it sounded silly to use a 125hp engine as the limit for a 20?boat weighing about 1900 lbs.
He therefore agreed to change the parameters in their Renken system and granted my request to insure the boat. Its now registered with 150hp, but the system will accept up to 175hp in future for both me and the rest of the population and for this model.

Thanks all for your ideas and good words, and its nice to hear you liked the boat. This time it was solved, and it feel good to know its insured and ready to go in the water!

Best regards
Mats
