I have a 1986 50hp 3 cylender 2 stroke Mercury...I've read all the prop sites and still don't know what size prop to use. I have no idea what the RPM is. I read to go to Merc Prop Selector and look up the moter. I have no idea where that is.. I'm useing this motor on a 24 ft pontoon. I would like to have the best size prop. for the boat. I'm not interested in a lot of power or speed,,, I want something to push the boat and not strain the engine.

[colour=blue]mercurymarine.com has the prop selector but you will need to input information such as boat weight etc.

You really need a tachometer and a friendly prop shop that will lend/rent you a few props.

They offer two props for that motor that are specifically for pontoon boats and other high thrust applications. The come in 9" pitch and 10 1/2" pitch. Generally I find that the 9" is best for 24 footers plus and 10 1/2" for smaller toons. But the only way to know for sure is to experiment. Without a tach, it's purely guesswork.
