A 12 ga shotgun! just kidding lol...A typical holesaw makes for a nice clean hole.

I start on the outside, it usually works cleaner. Your thru hull fitting should have a bit of a flange to cover up any roughness you do get. Take your time and use a brand new blade on the hole saw.

Use a sharp holesaw, starting on the outside. When the center guide bit pierces the inside, remove the holesaw and now go from the insde. This will reduce spalling of the gelcoat, leave cleaner edges, and reduce the chance of spider cracks.

Just drill from the outside. You'll be fine. Then apply a generous amount of 5200 under the t/hull flange. That will take care of any chips in the gel...

i fix boats....

tape off the area.

use hole saw.
when drill penetrates the hull......reverse the hole saw...it will chew the gellcoat...after you are thru the gellcoat....go forward with the hole saw gently till you are thru....

insert new bilge drain...and seal INSIde and out with 3m 5200.

Tape off the area.

Mark your spot, start on the outside and drill into the hull with a hole saw. Once the teeth are at the hull, lightly push to start to scuff into the hull. Do that till you get through the outer part of the gelcoat. Then you can speed it up. Once the hole goes through the inside of the boat you can then come from the inside and drill through.

Use the sealant other recommend for sealing. Use your plastic flange tubes to make it all pretty.
