Shift the boat into Fwd and leave it there for re-assembly. When removing the LU try not to disturb the reverse lock cam located on the lower shift shaft splines as this is important for proper re-assembly.
See beginning of LU removal at R&R AND OVERHAUL on page 284 and once LU is removed, go directly to:
To disassemble the drive shaft and
associated parts, reposition gearcase in
vise with drive shaft projecting upward.
Remove rubber slinger (11), water pump
body (16), impeller (19) and impeller drive key (20). That's as far as you have to go to get the impeller changed.
Re-assembly is the reverse.
