Need to find Serial # Year of Motor Mercury outboard

Hi.
I just purchased a used boat today which has 40 hp Mercury outboard on it ,The serial number tag is missing. I was told is a 1998 model but how can I confirm that . also is model # and serial #'s located anywhere else? Thanks

It shouls also be stamped on a 1" silvery plug on the powerhead

No such luck , Any motor stamping of year, model #?
