Need to find the Serial Number on my Merc outdrive

Hi Guys,
Need a little help, I've got what I believe to be a 73 Starcraft Chieftain with a first generation merc outdrive. I know the outdrive has the large eye hook on the top of it. I need to find the serial number on the outdrive and I'm not sure if I found the right number or not. The number I found was stamped on the left side of the outdrive when standing looking at the back of the boat. It was way up just about at the transom. The stamp read Mercury Marine 55894. That was the only number I could find anywhere on the outdrive however I have been wrong before so I thought I would ask the pro's. Any help would deffinatly be appreciated.

Ayuh,... IF the serial # is still there it's right near the Vent Plug, at the top of the drive, portside...
It might be long gone though...

it should be on the mercruiser sticker. if not. it may be under the sticker.

look real close, as ya can see, the number on the above drive is stamped very lightly. it was also, not visible while painted. couldn't even start to see the number under the paint. hardly see it with the paint scraped off..
