West Marine has a univeral tach. for your motor that runs off the alt. output. The instructions explain how to wire it. Fairly easy job. Good luck

Princess Auto has a real nice lookin' alt. tach for $9.99. Haven't hooked one up yet but it sure warrants a look for that price!
Checked Princess Auto online, can't find the tach. Can you point me in the right direction or is it a catalogue item only? Thanks, Rich

schematic, you should keep your nose out of thing you don't under stand. This tach won't do him a bit of good, wrong pole count... Not to mention who needs a 10,000 rpm tach on a 5500 rpm engine??
http://www.surplusunlimited.com/welcome.htm

These guy's here have OMC tachs for 30 bucks that will work on your engine...

Re: need to know how to install tach?????????

Hi DUNK...thanks for the input!
This tach is NOT using a balancing coil type movement. It's using an analog movement. (D'Arsonal movement)and as we know, D'Arsonal movements are most accurate around center scale deflection. Thus....a 10K rpm scale is ideal for 3000-7000 readings. )Skewing will be minimal from 3-7k. Secondly, by removing the rubber plug at the back of this tach, a potentiometer is exposed.(selector switch on some...I bought 4 and one had a selector) This of course allows us to calibrate the tach to the appropriate frequency range of the many different 'poled' stators found today. Thats why its called 'UNIVERSAL'. Don't forget, a tach is nothing more than a frequency meter.
What makes D'Arsonal movements unique, is for around $5.oo US, a hobbyist can build an interface board which would allow this tach movement to be used on any, I mean any, spark ignition system out there (from motorcycles to racing cars). This tach only costs $9.91 Canadian, which transpires to about $6.xx US. Isn't that what this website is here for? Saving bucks? .....and maybe learning a little something along the way? As I stated above, I have not installed mine yet, so I can't say for sure that the adjustments provided will be adequate. I think for $6 its worth the risk. The neat thing is, if you find this type of tach unusable, P.A. will always take it back....One last thing. P.A. also has 'marine' voltmeters and trim gauges on for $6 as well. Gotta like that! ;)

Re: need to know how to install tach?????????

Schematic,
What did you ever find out about using this PWC tach on your motor? Does it work? I have a 73 Merc 850. The tach on the boat may or my not work properly. It wasn't working, but after tinkering with it, I was able to get it to work. The lingering question now is, if it's working properly and reading the correct rpm's (plan to have it checked against a master tach next week). I plan on replacing all my gauges this winter though and this price range is definitely something I can afford (my wife seems to think I spend to much money on this boat....huh...imagine that!! LOL!) What's the exact website for Princess Auto. I did a search on yahoo and got nothing. Any suggestions/advice?

Re: need to know how to install tach?????????

You know, I've been on this board a year or so and
have learned much. The slant as of late has sent me looking for another site. (None such as good).

Dunk, I don't know who you are or what you claim to be, but if I have a question, I want Schematic to answer. Before you run your mouth, check out his indepth, pictoral responses and his patience
with people who don't have his abilities.

Schmatic, if you want to start a pay advice site,
I'll be your first subscriber. Thank you for your input in each and every response.

Dunk has helped many people on this board in the past and on other boards with his boating know how as Schematic has.
