Hi
I am looking at a used boat. It has a Mercury 25HP, manual start, tiller operated. They do not know what year the motor is but I was able to get the SN from them:

Mercury Outboard Motor
25 Horsepower
0A964279

They are having trouble getting the motor to start and believe it is a faulty kill switch. So I would need to know the year to order any parts for it if I decide to take on a "project" Motor.

Thanks in Advance
Don

Re: Need to know what year Mercury motor

With the Kill switch problem solved...The motor starts but is a hard start. Once running it is a little rough but ok. Now there is a new problem...After a fairly short run at full throttle, the motor just quits. It is then very very hard to get started up again. Can anyone suggest a logical progression for tests/replacement parts to solve this new problem(s).

Thanks
Don

Rebuild the carb. and that will fix both problems

So you don't think it is an electrical issue? This has been some of what I am hearing here...tune up kit...coils...rectifier etc.

Thanks

That engine has CD ign. and seldom will need a electrical tune up. if you check it for spark and it has some you might want to change plugs but the hard starting and quiting are both signs of a dirty carb.

Thanks so much !!! It is hard these days to seperate all the "could be's" from practical advice. I was thinking I was getting sucked into a "winter job" jack up situation from a repair company, and I am so glad I checked here after a friends advice. You probrably saved me major bucks in labor and parts that were not needed.

Many Thanks
Don
