Need to make a winch stand/bow stop.

Need to start thinking about finishing off the trailer. A new to me rig last summer that I'm in the middle of refurbishing. Winter got in the way before I could finish it.

The old winch stand looked like it came off a sherman tank but was too short for the boat and the winch was badly rusted so off it came. The bow stop was about 6" below the bow eye and there was no easy way to modify the height.

Anyone have suggestions on how to build one from scratch? Pictures would be great if you've got them.

The boat is a 16ft fiberglass deep V hull with an 80hp outboard. Guessing the weight around 1200-1500Ib's.

You'll need a welder, torches and good drill.
I'm guessing you don't have these otherwise you wouldn't have posted the question.
Take it to a local fabricating or trailer shop.

go one line there are many suppliers, trailer parts, and many winch stand and bow stops. it will be much cheaper, by the time you build one, and galvanize it.

Galvanized is only a bonus at that end of the trailer.

I've been welding and fabricating all my life...All you'll really need is a welder (an 110volt mig welder would work just fine) A drill and a chop saw (abrasive saw). An angle grinder would be nice to round the edges with but w/ a little elbow grease a file would work as well. Wouldn't take much to do it. If you lived closer I'd do it for you for a case of brew.

Good luck...hit me up if you have any questions I'd be glad to lend a some of pointers!!!

Re: Need to make a winch stand/bow stop.

Yeh, I've got access to a full fabrication shop and a couple welder friends that would be happy to weld up whatever I want to build. My question mostly was the approach to take, or what shape/form and materials to use.

For example would I use 2x4 HSS tube or ??? other material. What wall thickness? The existing assembly was made of 8" wide x 1/2" thick steel channel. Could have winched up the Queen Marry :D

How should it be braced and how would I construct the actual bow stop assembly to be strong enough?

I like the idea of buying one complete but can't find anyone locally, so by the time I add in freight and duties and brokerage fees etc the cost is prohibitive. Steel is cheap and I have the ability but not the knowledge.

Any tips would be appreciated.

MoodyBlue just look at some pictures of winch stands that are available at online suppliers and then go to it. It must be a little higher than your bow hook though. Look in box at the end of this page of similar threads.
