With String Lines,+ a Tape Measure you can Find the sizes of What you Need.......

Re: need to make new stringers

While I personally have not had to make them without a template I think I would plan on making templates or patterns with cheap, soft, pine - 1" by whatever. If you screw one up it is cheap to make another.

You need to take plenty of measurements as bondo points out. Make sure you do the measurements both side to side and fore and aft so that the deck will fit properly. Fit them all in before you cut the "real" stringers.

Have you checked the transom for rot as often they both need to be done.

Re: need to make new stringers

When I removed my rotted stringers, I cut away the old fiberglass that held them in place. After cleaning and vacuming the area, I noticed that there was still an outline (groove) made in the fiberglass in the bilge area where the old stringer was, and I was able to place the new piece of wood in the same groove, attaching it to the good part of the old stringer with a metal plate and screws, and refiberglassing. That groove actually helped hold the new stringer in place. So when you cut away the fiberglass, cut it as low to the bilge as you can without cutting through the hull . it will leave about a 1/8" high groove of fiberglass that will help you out when installing the new stringer.

Re: need to make new stringers

Mine were rotted as well and I had no template. I used a long 1" square piece of pine which I laid accross the hull and measured every 6 inches along the length of where the stringer was supposed to go, measuring the height. Based on that I made a pattern out of heavy cardboard and then the cardboard became my template.

It turned out to be very easy because my stringers were a consistent 4 inch height until I got far enough forward and then the cardboard came in handy.

good luck!
