Bought a used rental ski boat a sunbird and it has scratches and chips allover the boat from the rubber rail down, my plan was to fill in all the cracks and scratches with 3m marine filler and commence to painting, bu thave no idea what is the best type of paint to use for an inexperienced painter like myself, spray gun, roller, etc... I have no idea, do you have to use primer??? regular epoxy paint, automotive type paint enamel, laquer..etc.... have no idea just wanna pretty it up some, boat looks fine in the water but when on the trailer it looks bad scrapes, scratches small gouges everywhere.. any ideas or help really appreciated
Thanks

Re: Need to paint boat from rub rail down???

Interlux makes a variety of paints that are easy to use. Their website has all of the information you could every want. Check it out:

www.yachtpaint.com

You will probably end up using something like their Brightsides (1-part paint) or Perfection (2-part paint). You will get great results using the roll and tip application method which is nicely described and demonstrated on their site.

Whatever paint you use, following their directions explicitly and use the recommended products for that paint system.

Good luck,
Dan

Re: Need to paint boat from rub rail down???

Thanks Dan, watched a few videos talked to a tech rep, looks like good stuff, the videos make it look really simple......i really doubt it is as easy as they make it out to be, but definately am going to consider it. they paint the boat with a roller that kind of surprised me I figured it had to be a gun on the final coat of paint but they say a roller and a brush to hide the marks....has anyone here used the Interlux products???? Any reviews for the do-it yourselfer???
thanks

Interlux, Pettit - they all make good products. Some folks say one is better than the other but I have used them all. No glaring reports on any of them, the single part paints that is. Now, the two part epoxy modified coatings are a different breed altogether. Most people say that their paint failed, i.e. flaking, peeling, etc. Well that all falls under the prep issue. Always remember that a great paint job is 99% prep and 1% paint. You'll never have a problem if the prep is immaculate. :D

Re: Need to paint boat from rub rail down???

i just did my boat with interlux brightsides. it's a very nice paint, good shine and very hard. i used the roll and tip method with very pleasing results. help yourself to have a look on my url to see. i also used the interlux primer as well. but be very careful to sand the primer smooth. i made a mistake on part of my boat to brush on the primer and didn't sand it smooth enough. it left brush marks when i painted. i had to re do it again. just my two cents worth. good luck.

Looks great!

Remember to contact Service Canada and get your license numbers! $250 fine if they catch you on the water.

Recently finished my skiff with Perfection. 60+ hours. Looks good except in a few spots where my roller had to much paint on it during the final coat. It takes a few mistakes to follow all of the instructions properly. The best advice I remember reading on this forum is to buy stock in 3M. I used over 250 pieces of sand paper!

I recomend spending most of your time on the prep work, if you do a good job there dont matter what you use, if your not handy stay away from the 2 part paints.

Re: Need to paint boat from rub rail down???

Well I am gonna do this over the winter and have decided to go with the brightside, just am debating wether or not to remove the rubber rail??? is this hard to do??? and how would you guys suggest to lift the boat, it is a 17' sunbird spirit open bow, I believe it weights around #1000 without the outboard??
I was thinking remove the outboard then use the bow hook and the 2 hooks in the rear and lifting with straps on my rafters in the garage,, is this safe for the boat or too much stress on the hooks of the boat???
Thanks

Forgot one more question, has anyone tried spraying the brightside on? seems like with all the ridges and curves on the boat it would be easier to spray.
Thanks again
