I think I need to pull my motor.
Have a 1993 Maxum 1900, with chewed up teeth on the flywheel. I bought a new starter, and was wondering how difficult it would be to pull the motor to get the flywheel.
I'm pretty handy and can find my way around an engine. Is this something I can do in my garage, or should it be left to a mechanic?

My buddy has a 4.3 in a 1989 Welcraft and had the same problem. The bolts backed out and sheered them off. We pulled the motor and it took us about 4 hours or so. The biggest problem he had was finding something tall enough to lift the motor out. We had to borrow a tractor with forks. He didn't have a beam to hook a chain hoist to. We simply bought a chilton's and started in on it.

Your typical engine hoist is capable of hauling the engine out of the boat. After you hoist it out you will pull the bellhousing off (~6 bolts), the coupler (3 bolts) and then the flywheel (6 bolts).
Flywheel bolts are on with 75 ft-lbs I think you will have to either be able to hold the flywheel still with your hands or get a flywheel wrench.

Re-bolt everything on and re-install into boat. An experienced boat mechanic could have it all done in about an hour or two if that gives you any idea of a time frame to follow.

I've done this a couple times now.. All the engine wiring can stay attached to the engine if you disconnect the main electrical plug. Obviously need to disconnect the shift and throttle linkages. Disconnect the exhaust at the Y-pipe rubber boots and you won't even need to remove the risers.

Take the flywheel to an automotive machine shop for ring gear replacement.
