GUYS,
I asked a question about removing a brokem manual relief screw a few days ago. I have 87 merc 150. The tilt/trim relief screw broke and have to remove it. The hole that allows access to the screw will not allow me to pull screw through it. I was told there was a e-clip on the screw but there is a big plastic looking washer that looks to be permanently attached to screw in the front around the head area of the screw. This prevents me from pulling screw thru the access hole. Its almost the same size as the access hole. I was thinking of maybe getting a rotary grinder and opening it up just a little bit to remove screw. any suggestions here or should i do this. thanks for help

Re: Need To Remove Tilt/trim Manual Relief Screw

thanks wilson.. for a minute there i thought i was alone.. my problem is i cant remove the screw . when it broke half stayed in and the other half is just hanging. The front part of screw the one with the slot in it cant be removed. There is a big plastic washer on the screw the exact size of opening in the tilt/trim bracket. this prevents me from even getting to the broke part in the pump. i need to remove the front part of screw before i can get to broke part in the pump. any suggestions..

you have two choices. you can try to cut it behind the washer or do what i had to do and remove the whole trim tilt system. i had to so i can get the trim motor rebuilt and i broke my screw off as well and cant find a new one.

Sorry, but to have enough room to work on that relief valve your going to have remove the trim unit.
I had to drill a hole in the center of mine (plastic p.o.s!) to relieve pressure on system to be able to lift the motor. Then I screwed a 3" deck screw into the hole. My relief must not have been loosened in 17 yrs. in broke off inside -3 times. ! It has 2 or 3 o-rings on it, its in there snugly! If you resort to this, drill carefully! I had a new relief on hand to work off/reference of to avoid drilling to deeply.
