Hi all,
Started to repair a very soft floor near the engine and by accident sawed right throught the hull where the fiberglass ALMOST meets the wood.
Need to know what the best way to repair it is. Not affraid to do the work, but only want to do it once and last forever.
I'm sure this has happened before, so any expert advise would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Need to repair saw cut in hull of Bayliner Capri

hi.....welcome to i boats ! :)

this is the best how to forum on the net....bar none.

im not really sure how much you went thru....so im going to assume you went right thru.

1.
scuff area with 80 grit sand paper.

2.
vaccume and clean area with acetone......clean it good.

3. using pioly resin.....mix up a batch of what we call peanut butter.
there are several variations....but for that repair i would use 50% resin...30 % milled fibers. (a really fluffy powder like stuff...its basically very finly ground up fiberglass, and 20 % 1/4 inch short strand fibers.

catylize the resin at 2 % with mekp.....mix in the short strand....and mix it good....then add the milled fibers....and mix it till it is fully mixed with no lumps.....remember...as soon as the mekp hits the resin...the clock is ticking....you have less than 5 mins to mis this goop.

take a plastic spreader and fill the cut mark....and lightly around the area.

using poly resin and 1.5 oz chopped strand matt....
(again catylize at 2 % mekp) fiberglass 3 layers of 1.5 over the area...right over the wet peanut butter....each layer getting a little bigger and remove any air....

let cure.....

drink beer. :D

the whole process takes less than one hour, and is the very basis of fiberglass hole repair.

cheers

Thank oops,
Yup, right through. Actually about 3ft long the width of the blade. Can I do the repair from the inside.
What is required to finish it on the outside and still keep it looking good?
Thanks.

lol.....happens to all of us.

ok....inside out repair...

put a piece of packing tape over the outside of the slice.
and fill the slice fully from the inside
do the inside like i suggested and add 2 layers of 1708 over the slice.

ok.....from the out side. after the inside is cured.

grind off the gellcoat down the slice. add 2 layers of csm over the slice.....sand flat...and re gell the slice area.....it will be about 4 ins wide and the legnth of the slice. you can spray it or brush it on...i like spraying. then sand and buff.

it sounds involved but its not....
in fact its a very simple repair that will teach you the basics of all fiberglass/ gellcoat repairs.

total time on the out side ....about 3 hours not including gellcoat / fiberglass cure time.
