Need to replace starter gear

I need to replace the small brass(?) starter gear, I think it's called a bendix, on my '89 Evinrude 150XP. Should I be able to remove this little assembly by just taking off the nut on the end of the starter shaft, or do I have to disassemble the whole starter? I took the nut off a while back, but it didn't look like the gear/spring assembly would easily come off. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I, perhaps am not the best to respond to this but since no one else has by now - I think you are correct and I would not hesitate to try it on mine (I do have the shop manual which helps). I would take it apart slowly and carefully. I am pretty sure that I did it some time back. If I remember correctly, after I loosened the nut I had to detach the starter from the block in order to get the bendix to clear the flywheel.

SoLittle,

Not sure I completely understand - do you mean you think you needed to totally disassemble the starter to get the bendix off, or that it just came off by removing the nut on top of it and you only had to remove the starter to get it to clear the flywheel? My flywheel is already off, as there are several severely damaged teeth that I am going to attempt to repair - if I'm unsuccessful, I'm going to have to replace it (ouch!!!! Have you priced those things?!?!). Thanks for the reply.

If your looking for that part you can try this site-www.dbelectrical.com. They'll be able to fix you up at a good price. Or maybe you can try some NAPA part stores.

Dutch
