I need to replace my stolen 1969 6hp Evinrude Outboard.
I have options of a 1995 9.9 Johnson, 2001 9.9 Johnson 2 stroke with 1 year warranty (both in excellent condition) or go for a brand new 6 or 9.9 4 stroke.
Used on a 12ft aluminum starcraft.
Weight of motor is also a factor.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I would have no problems with either the '95 or the '01. Obviously newer is preferred but I wouldn't pay a lot more for the '01 just because of that. I personally wouldn't want the added weight of a 4 stroke especially on a 12'.

I have a '71 Merc 7.5hp so I feel your pain losing the old kicker.

Weight is certainly a factor but I doubt you'll find anything as light as your old Evinrude? Wasn't that an air-cooled motor? My 2-stroke '71 Mercury is heavier than the current 4-stroke engines due to older metals and design.

I'd certainly go for the 9.9, whether new or old. No point spending money and not gaining some performance.

I respectably disagree. The newer motors are actually typically heavier than the old ones and his Evinrude was not air cooled.

Ron.... to compare or for a reference of the specifications of your lost '69 motor, I have this scanned page from the 1969 Johnson catalog.

Evinrude would be the same.

Thanks to all for the input.

I think I have decided to go for 2001 2-stroke Johnson 9.9hp. which was originally sold and maintained by the same Marina.
These motors are in high demand and going for approx. $1500.00 Cdn.
I have checked with BRP and they have no idea when they will produce the new 9.9 hp Evinrude E-tech 2-stroke.

The Marina I deal with is also throwing in a new gas tank with gage.

The worst part of this whole experience is I just had my old Evinrude overhauled for $600.00 including new gas tank and never even got to try it out.

Now THAT sucks!!

Good luck with the 9.9.

I believe this is a bit of a silver lining to a bad experience.
My claims adjuster told me I have a replacement clause on my cottage insurance and I could look at a new motor & upgrade if reasonable.
They just fully approved and I picked up a 2010 2-stroke 9.9hp S/S Yamaha complete w/ fuel line & tank.
Not familiar with Yamaha but I am told they are also a very good engine.

I'd double check the year on that motor, if that is a 2 stroke, it's not a 2010. Yamaha dropped all two stroke motors last year. I tried to buy one early this year and none were to be found anywhere new.

I'm building a 62 merc 60 6 hp for my kicker, I love the old motors , nice and simple. Even if insurance were picking up the tab I'd still go old, old was when stuff was built well.
