Hi,
I have been asking questions on this forum and have had good feedback so here goes again. I have been having trouble with my 60 (ob343140) and might have found the problem. On the switch box, the colors are embossed, and two were not on the right terminal. I numbered them but I don't think they were right to begin with. The only thing I don't know, and my manual doesn't tell me, is if the other end of the wire is on the right coil. (not embossed) Now they are as follows.........GW-upper coil............GR-middle coil...............G-lower coil. My manual shows every motor except mine. Thanks...............Jerry

I don't have your specific motor but all other 3 cyl shows Green to no. 1, Green/red to no 2 and Green/white to no 3. Looks like top and bottom reversed.

the switchbox is embossed so I would say those terminals were reversed, But the other end of the wire is what is in question. I think it was you who told me the coils numbered from the top 321 and the cylinders are from the top 123. That is what is cast on the waterjacket.
If so I have it wired right now. I searched every where and can't find a diagram on the net. I have to go to a dealer to pick up parts and am going to see if he has a diagram for that motor. The Clymer manual doesn't seem to want to talk about the 60 after 1975 when they went to the cd ignition. Thanks for the reply..............Jerry

One would think that the coils would be numbered the same as the cylinders. They do number them 321 in clymers and that does make things confusing. Good idea to verify with the dealer. Let us know what you find out.

Re: need wiring dia. 60 merc

Hi,
I mounted all three plugs on a bar this morning and clamped them where I could see them , grounded them and turned the motor with a variable speed drill and watched the firing order. All plugs fired in the right sequence with the wires as I stated, so I have proved they are right. I marked the flywheel for 12 and 3 and made sure they were coming up to fire. I found a 70 hp wiring diagram that has the same switch box with all wire colors the same and everything else so I am going to call that a diagram for my 60. I also found a 70 that wasn't the same and didn't have a switchbox like mine and wasn't color wired like mine, so I guess I guess there were some different ones. Anyway this diagram matches my motor and wires it right so end of that problem. Still waiting for parts, keep you informed..............Jerry

I found a chilton book at the liabrary on wireing diagrams for outboards and the coils are the same 321 from the top down. The diagram was for a 70hp and I had one just like it at home. Would be nice if both books would have told you that it was the same on a 60
