Need wiring diagram for Electric start 1965 Evinrude Ski-Twin 33 hp It has the engine wiring in-tact all the way to the box containing the solenoid and main connector, but after that it's a mess, Im not sure where to connect 2 wires from the engine harness to the ignition switch, one is 16ga black the othe is 16ga black w/ white stripe, they were connected to the original Ignition switch which was all smashed up. I can get the motor to run without them hooked up, but I know they should, be. And if I connect them to ignition or battery voltage, they get really hot, so that must be wrong.
Thanks in advance

Those sound like the magneto lines (one for each spark). The only difference is my book lists them as 18ga. They ground to kill the spark, and therefore kill the engine. Connecting them together will kill or reduce spark energy. Connecting them to +12v will burn up the magneto coils.
PS ~190v pulsed is developed on these wires when the engine is running - they can give you quite a jolt!

Ooops - Missed something. You seem to be labouring under a misunderstanding. The +12v system has *absolutely nothing* to do with the ignition system. The ignition system is self contained under the flywheel, so you can start the engine with a flat battery or with other 12v system damage.

Thanks Paul, I had run across some information about the kill switch set up for outboard motors after I posted this, so I went out and did a little testing.

I hooked up a generic key type ignition switch, which doesnt have nearly the amount of terminals as the original OEM switch, That is when I found I had no way to kill the motor,

I then tried grounding them together, and poof ! she shut right off :)

After finding that out, I was assumming that the extra terminals on the OEM switch provided a short between the two wires, or shorted them both to ground when key was in the OFF position.

But I was still a little nervous that I may toast something. Your post set my mind at ease :)

I am going to install an independant kill switch, since the new key switch has no provision to short these two wires.

Is it better to short them together, or to short them both to ground?? I can set it up either way.

Also, should I use a toggle switch so they remain shorted at all times when engine is off,(i.e. to bleed off excess voltage) or is a momentary kill switch (which will leave them open after shutdown) better??

I think read somewhere that 50:1 oil mixture is correct for this motor, Does that sound right?

It hasnt been run in a long time so I'm running her a little rich on oil right now.

Sorry to be such a bother, I am an auto mechanic, but dont know much about outboards.
Hopefully I can return the favor.

Thanks for all your help, it is greatly
appreciated.

The switch orignally connected them to ground, but do whatever suits you. You might also want to have a look at this previos kill switch question . The fasttwin has the same ignition system as your outboard.
Any charge on the magnetos or the condensors is gone within miliseconds of stopping the engine, so you could install a pushbutton if you like; it would probably be more convinient.
I don't know what your particular engine called for for oiling, but mine called for 24:1. I've got a '62+'63 28hp (2.875" bore instead of 3.06" on yours, and no thermostat). I understand it's safe to run these engines at 50:1. Again you may want to look at this
Hunt around this BBS looking for info on '60s johnson/evinrude big twins (28-40hp) and there won't be much left to know about your outboard!
