need wiring help...

I've decided to use my boat's wiring to test the 175 Evinrude that I have.
My boat has a force 125 (1984), and the Evinrude is the 1977 175hp.

I know wires coming from the boat, but have had no luck in finding the pin out for the 'orange plug' that the evinrude uses. I've got a few of the wires figured out for the cross reference, but there are a couple I don't have hooked up yet, and don't want to add spark to it until I know I won't fry something.

I've decided that once I figure out which engine I will be using, that I'm going to purchase the online manual...but I have to figure out if this 175 will work or not first...or if I will be sticking with the 125.

So is there a place where I can find these pin outs? Or does someone know what color wire in the plug is what?

Thanks!

Re: need wiring help...

Ok, actually...some good news and some remaining issues.

I couldn't figure out how to cross the wire harnesses, so I ended up using the fuel line and the power from the boat but tweaking the original wiring some more...but I got it STARTED!!!! Not only did it start, but it fired RIGHT over...with authority and it idles nice and smooth!

However, I still need to figure out the difference in wiring harnesses.
So I need to ask you wiring gurus for some help. I used the image from the secret file thread that shows the orange plug wires. And I combined it in photoshop with a rendering of the force wire pig tail coming from the boat. There are some differences in the wire colors and also how they are tagged. I'm no electrician and don't want to fry something with the trial and error methodology. ;)

And yes, there are two wires correctly marked magneto. That's one thing that confuses me. Is there a + and - side? They aren't marked that way.

Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Anything...anyone... lol...please....

Re: need wiring help...

I've shifted gears and I'm trying to research individual wires instead of broad explanations....

The heat wire coming from the Force pigtail... Seems that goes to a heat sensor on the force side. Would that be safe to assume it would connect to the alarm wire on the Evinrude plug? Would make sense...but again...don't want to fry anything.

That leaves two wires left on the force side...both of which are the magneto wires. On the evinrude side, that leaves the accessory and ignition kill....

Driving me nuts!

You wont be able to wire the force wiring to the evinrude effectivley. Let me make it real easy for you. Sell the force and buy the proper controls and wiring harness. It will save you tons of headaches. Besides the evinrude is the better move hands down. Good luck.

Re: need wiring help...

I hear where you are coming from. But here is where I'm at.
I'm trying to keep investments to a minimum until I know which way I'm going.
Next move is to get the motor mounted on the boat, and put the boat in water at the dock. See how it floats, and how much deeper it makes the rear sit.
If that's safe, then some simple buzzing around at slow speeds. Then ultimately build up to wide open throttle and ensure that it is stable and safe.
If that all pans out then I was going to actually do just as you say. Buy original controls. But that's $300. And if I buy that up front and the engine doesn't work out for some reason, then I'm deeper into the project...

Right now, I can make the motor run, and I could just keep it rigged like that for the testing. But I don't have the charging system hooked up because of the wiring. So if I take it out on the lake, I'll be paddling back.

So having said that, since the harness on the evinrude side doesn't have any kind of magneto hookup, does that mean that it traverses back through the battery cable connection? If so, then that would work for now. If not, how can I make it charge during the test?

What does your coast guard plate say for hp rating.

My sticker says 140. But according to the Coast Guard Safety Standards for Backyard Boat Builders' instructions on how to calculate a boat's max "everything"...I actually came up with 175. So if after testing, the boat handles fine, doesn't want to sink, or act funky at WOT, and if I do keep the engine, then I will follow their instructions on making the proper tag.
