Need year for Evinrude/Johnson Motor

I was given an old Johnson motor (10 hp) from my fatherinlaw. I like the retro look so I have decided to restore it for fun, but after carefully examining it I realize that somebody has put a Johnson motor on a Evinrude drivetrain. So all I have is the Evinrude serial off the lower, and this is 15024-50738. From the design of the cover I would guess the motor is about 1955 or there about. The only other question is should I restore it as a Johnson or as an Evinrude?

The model number (15024) is that of a 1958 Evinrude. If you're going to restore it to original condition, logic tells my puny little mind to do it as an Evinrude.<br /><br />If you're just going to fix it up to run around with (i.e. just want it to run well and be reliable) it doesn't really matter.<br /><br />Just remember, there could be subtle differences in parts between an Evinrude and a Johnson of that age. Make sure the parts you buy are for the model number/serial number you listed. BTW, there should be a small plug (it looks like a "freeze-plug") on the block, it should have some numbers on it. Do they match the number on the lower? <br /><br />-John

Howdy, SADuguay.<br /><br />The 1958 10hp Johnson and Evinrude engines are identical. You probably have a Johnson bonnet on an Evinrude engine.<br /><br />The right paint and decals will turn it into an Evinrude bonnet.<br /><br />Be sure to run 24:1 fuel mix.<br /><br />Good luck.
