Hey Folks,
Looking to build my own swim platform extension on my Doral Br185. Essentially I am looking to build a platform similar to what is found on dedicated wakeboard boats. The purpose would be to be able to stand on the platform to strap into our wakeboards.

My idea is to go with 2 "L" brackets to secure the platform to the boat, I am thinking of building the platform in a semi circle shape with the width being approx. 6 feet and having it extend maybe 20 inches behind the boat. I plan on building the frame out of steel, my uncle is a master welder and plans on builfing it out of steel approx 3/8 inch think and maybe 4 inches wide, then I will cover the frame with composite deck board.

What I need from you guys is you opinion on whether or not this can work, also, what technique would you use to bolt the platform to the boat and what type of sealer should be used where the holes are drilled as well as where and how much of this sealant should be applied.

Fire off your ideas, opinions and comments!

Thanks

Rather than an "L" bracket bolt the back of the platform to the transom and use tubular (stainless) supports from the back of the platform to the transom. As far as sealant use 3m 5200 it will last as long as the platform.
here is a picture of mine.

Thanks for the idea, I will look into that for sure, wondering if instead of drilling new holes, I would use the tow eyelets as a bolting option for the support brackets? Im sure I could design a brace with an eyelet built in? What;s ur take on that?

Those are also your tie down points for your trailer I wouldn't alter them in any way. too much liability if something fails it would become your issue rather than a manufacturer issue.

An "L" bracket is not the way to go, it would have to be huge to support any weight at the edge of the platform. Most ski boats that do not have the support poles have pretty robust metal poles that go through the transom and mount to the stringers. Your best bet is to bolt the platform to the transom and then place 2-4 poles at the edge of the platform that angle down to the transom. Be very aware of the outdrive in all positions before permanently installing the the support brackets. Probably would not work with the transom tie downs for this reason.

okay, thanks for the heads up, obviously a little more complicated than I expected but I am still not ready to fork over 1000$ to buy a custom platform, I'd rather keep that 1000$ and put it towards that Centurion i've been eyeing, ahahaha, oh gawd if only i could convince the wife!
