Needing a fuel pump...

I have an old ('57) 18 horse Evinrude Fasttwin that I have converted to the single line from the duel line fuel feed. I believe the pump that came with the kit is needing replaced because having to use starter fluid to start when cold. The kit came with a 304089. I was given a '58 that had also been converted and it had a 312631 pump on it. But unfortunately that pump got broke. Trying to find a pump that will work. Any one know of one? I contacted the folks at iboat and they suggested going here to see what I could find out.
Hep me!

If it keeps running after you used the starting fluid, which you should not be doing, will it start if you squeeze the primer bulb?

The fuel pump has absolutely nothing to do with starting the motor. You fill the carburetor by squeezing the primer bulb. Then it is ready to start. It is only after the motor starts, that the fuel pump keeps supplying more fuel to keep it running.

Re: Needing a fuel pump...

After the starting fluid ( hate to use it) start, seems to start first pull rest of the day without having to squeeze bulb at all. If I do not use the SF I can pull it squeeze, pull till my arm and shoulder wears out. And it does not start.

Thanks for the help.

Ah so. The line is new. The tank is in great shape. New connectors etc. And it is filling the glass on the side of the motor. Maybe just not getting into the carb yet?

Thanks for the help.

Have you cleaned/rebuilt the carb?

Check that your choke plate is fully closing and advances the throttle plate when the choke lever is pulled out.

Checked, the choke is not closing all the way. Seems the notch in the brass looking bar is to far back or the piece that sets in the notch is to long to hold the choke in proper position. Not sure I fully understand advancing the throttle plate? There is a cylindrical piece that is up against the throttle plate, and when the choke is pulled out it pulls away from plate. The plate does not move itself.
Guess I need a manual.

get yourself a oil squirt bottle and put mixed gas in it and use instead of, starter-fluid-crank-shaft-ruiner ... thats all one word by the way..kinda like mashed-potatoes-and-gravy

Excellent idea. I like that. I have another 18hp Evinrude and the choke mechanism as a whole seems tighter. Thinking maybe trading out components to see if that resolves it. But certainly like the squirt bottle as oposed to "starter-fluid-crank-shaft-ruiner" method now employed.
Thanks again.
