What would the symptoms be on 1984 100hp evinrude if one of the needle valve keepers was not attached to the float and actually missing? Anything is possible but I think the keeper was not there when I took it apart.
Thanks.

What is a float plunger keeper? Are you speaking of the nylon float hinge pin or possibly the rubber tipped float needle valve?

In either case, if they were missing, fuel would flow constantly into the float chamber and out of every outlet passageway of the carburetor.... an excessively flooding situation.

The little spring clip "bobbie pin" that attaches the needle valve to the float arm.

The clip is there to make sure the needle drops when the float drops; if the needle sticks closed then fuel will not get into the carb bowl and will starve those cylinders. You need to replace that clip.

I have just rebuilt both carbs but curious if the keeper was missing (I think it was missing when I took one apart) that may be the root of my problems.

If the "keeper" is not there, you will either: 1) not notice any symptoms, or 2) notice fuel starvation.

FWIW I rebuilt a carb and dropped that part in the lake....on weekend so parts store was closed....said "WTH", and put it back together knowing there might be a problem, I could get the part if it was a problem.
Three years later it is still running fine as is. (but it's only a 6HP)

Would an RPM drop be a symptom?

If fuel wasn't getting into the float bowl, yes.

I spent more money than I should have and more than quoted for a rebuild about a 1-1/2 ago. Thinking I would get a lot of use of of it I wanted it done right. I noticed that the RPM's did not as high as before and called the repair company who said "he didn't do anything to reduce the RPM. So (dumb on my part) I just drove it. Now I think that might have been the reason for the lack of RPM and perhaps the reason for the 2nd rebuild. I hope to do it right this time.
Thanks very much for putting up with rookie questions.
