Went to rebuild my "new to me" 1986 Evinrude 40 hp carbs and found out, not one but both slow speed needle valves are completely gone. Since getting the boat I have ran it for maybe 3 hrs. and ran good top end but was rough at idling, now I know why.

Where can I get new needle valves?

Tried them and other online parts shops and no one sells the needle valve. Wondering this has to come directly from Evinrude? Can't find one online.

Are you sure your motor is a 86? The carb diagram shows only orifices no needle valves. Check your carbs for numbers. The previous owner may have put different carbs on your motor.

BRP are the official suppliers for Evinrude/Johnson but only dealers can purchase stuff off them direct, you can deal with boats.net and from what i've seen they have the same stuff cheaper......

Have you tried contacting Crowleys or another dealer direct?

Cofe, I'm not sure what I have. All the online diagrams I have found does not show a needle valve but the diagram that came with the rebuild kit shows a needle valve.

When you say orifice does that mean the carbs are set and have no needle valves? The brass orifice i took out of the carb is stamped "40", does that help to identify what carb I have? The tag says 395790 MX 18 L K.

395790 is listed in the link i sent you towards the bottom, item #9 lists the idle orifice as a "40", your carbs appear to be stock.....

What is the number of the rebuild kit?

That's a Sierra pn, not BRP.

Sierra Kit no. 18-7222 replaces OEM part# 398729, 396701, 392061. Do these carbs not have needle valves?

392061 is the OEM rebuild number kit for your carbs, the kit you have is the correct one......

Cofe has already stated, the needle valve is on the float.....

Do I need to take the butterfly out to soak it in Berrymans carb cleaner?

The only needle valve is on the float. I do not see any more needle valves in this picture or on the parts description. Even at Evinrude.com they have the same picture....

DO NOT remove them.....leave both butterflys (choke and throttle) in the main housing and soak.....
