needs lots of choke

Hi all, new to the forum

My problem is this- every time I run at low throttle I have to continuously choke the motor to prevent it from dying. It is as if there is not enough gas getting into the motor. At full throttle, it works fine. This is the biggest problem when I am trying to load the boat back onto the trailer. The problem also exists when I am first starting the motor.

Any ideas? It is a 1972 mercury 500 (50 hp) outboard.

Thanks-

Could be a few things. Most likely the carbs need cleaning. You can also try turning out the idle jets a 1/4 turn (richer) to see if that helps. Also, squeeze the fuel bulb and see if that helps. If it does, your fuel pump is weak. Just some quick thoughts.

Thanks for the quick response. Is cleaning the carbs a simple job? The motor had new carbarator and water pump (possibly fuel pump too) put in last summer around august.
