Only possible factor would be it's age. However those 18s are real gems and that one is fairly priced.

That is a 50+ year old outboard, NYG. It is worth one price if it is demonstrated under load on the water. Deduct 10% for demo in a tank or on on muffs, 20% if not demoed.

In good shape, a fine outboard.

The 18hp motors are excellent.close to big twin performance in a lighter more economical package.73#Your boat should be able to make 25-27 mph lightly loaded. About 1.8 gph(gallons per hour)at wot.A big twin is about 125# and can make about 33 on about 4gph at wot.

Look for signs of overheating (burnt or discolored paint on the powerhead). Check for broken rubber mounts that hold the hood. The hood and lower pan should have a bit of rubbery feel if you try to move it, but it should not flop around loosly. A very common problem with them. Not the end of the world, but a bit of a job to fix and new mounts are hard to find.

If outboard was transported in a p/u or car trunk, the shifter may be worn and could cause some problems. I had a used 5 1/2 I bought once and it had the problem. Don't remember the exact details.....been too long.

I had a '57 or 8 18 I bought new and it was a fine, smooth running, quiet, powerplant. Only problem I had was I needed the power of the Big Twin 35 hp but couldn't afford one.

classic motor. I had one my dad bought new and ran like a champ until I had to junk it (see below). Sturdy work horse.

Good tip on the motor mounts. Also, I tested one once that had run hot and it did fine for a while then as it heated up and speed increased went screwy, so good advice about testing. However, in the used small OB market, it's usually grab and go with no sea trial.

My downfall started when the shift handle broke. 50 year old pot metal, bought a new one, easy swap, right?

No. the bolts were frozen. All of them. tried switching my powerhead onto a parts motor (locked up) that looked better, same problem. An old timey small motor mechanic couldn't get them loose, either.

So I would take a wrench/socket set along and see if it can be worked on. a simple thing like a shift handle can do you in. If that checks out, go for it! (didn't see the price)

Here is something I have come across on these 18's, I had 4 in my shop over the last 2 seasons, 2 had the top spark plug holes stripped & one had a helicoil in the top plug hole, the 4th was fine it was a 18 rude, blue block with a replaced white (jonny) head. So if it were me, I would take along a spark plug socket. Also when was the last impeller replacement? If the lower unit won't come apart this can get complicated,, Is this a saltwater run engine? I just sold one this past season after a head replacement, carb clean, impeller, new fuel lines, overall tune-up & rattle can paint job I got $450.00 good luck & check that top plug hole!
