Hi ! Thanks in advancefor any help! I have a 1975 Johnson 115HP S/N 115ESL75E . I just purchased it. I have a Factory service manual. I only have spark to the two cylinders on the right bank. The manual says to use a neon tester to test the signal coils. Is there any other way to test them? I have test lights and DVOM meter and an analog meter as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Neon Tester?

That engine has the powerpack with screw on terminals. To test the ignition coils, simply transfer the port (left) bank orange coil wires to the terminals that fire the other bank coils. If they not have spark, obviously the coils are okay.... put the wires back where they belong.

Trace the wires that lead from the timer base under the flywheel to the powerpack. Switch the port and starboard bank leads. If the coils that did not spark now do spark, the powerpack is okay and the timer base sensors are faulty. If no change, the pack is faulty.

That ignition system can obviously be tested using its own circuitry.... the neon tester is not needed.

Also the timer base sensors, stator, rectifier etc can easily be tested using a simple ohm meter. The readings should be included in the manual.
