Neptune WC-1 Mightly Mite - Advice needed

I bought an old Neptune WC-1 Mightly Mite. It was sort of working and I began to tinker and restore it. I'm having two issues and I'm hoping some seasoned people here can help with some advice.

1 - I cannot get the motor to start if I put the prop all the way in the water. What I mean is that it will start and run if the prop is out of the water or if it's just 2 inches in the water. In other words, it would not start in a normal running situation mounted on a transom. It seems as though the load is too much for it to start. So what I've been doing to test is start it up in shallow and then put it down about 6 inches of water.

2 - It seems to run a little hot and I'm wonder if it's cooling properly or if the exhaust is plugged.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

So I am researching this issue and have found others having a similar problem. On another forum I read, it has been suggested that the problem is an exhaust back pressure issue and to remedy this, all one needs to do is adjust the iddle to account for the back pressure of the water on the exhaust.

This of course makes sense to me, however, this has led me to further questions. Like, why didn't it start at full throttle. I could understand that it stalls at idle, but I'm referring to the fact that I cannot start it while the prop is in the water. So I'll continue to do my research for a solution.

Ahhhh yes. The old Mighty Mites are cool little engines. The first thing I would do is check over the ignition system and make sure the points are set right and perfectly clean, then I would check the cooling system and make sure it's completely free flowing.

I'm closing this thread out, but on a good note.

I've finally fixed the issue.

Long story long, after taking almost everything apart and finding the motor is actually in great shape, I still could not get it to start while in the water. I went to the manual because something caught my eye when I was taking it apart. It was strange but it seems like the intake reed was upside down.

Anyways, I was right. Not only was the intake reed upside down, the intake reed and the intake gasket were in the wrong position. They had been switched by the previously owner. I took the carb off, switched their position, right side the reed, and tightened everything up again.

It started right up on the first pull after that. After 15 minutes more of adjusting the mix and idle, it was purring. I couldn't believe it.

I'm one super happy guy now. Only 3 more motors to go.

Isn't it something when a when we stumble on a solution. Way to go!
