Nervous first time boat owner replacing impeller

So on my lunch break I visited my local marine dealer and chatted up the repair tech asking questions about my new purchase, a '68 Mercury 1000 outboard. After talking with him, he put the fear of God in me about changing the water pump every year in that outboard, saying that they were notorious for still having a pee stream but not pumping water over the top cylinder and blowing it out.

Now I JUST purchased this boat 2 days ago, and had it in the water last night and got it running and putted around the lake for about 2 hours (8 MPH speed limit after 7, so I literally putted around the lake). It had a good pee stream (I didn't feel the temp of the water tho) but now I am terrified of putting my boat back in the lake until I replace the impeller. Talking with the previous owner they don't know when it was last changed, they took it in for service in 2003, but it doesn't look like they changed the impeller then, and my guess is that hasn't been changed since then... so we are talking about an impeller that is probably at least 7 years old. The marine tech suggested I replace the impeller every year! The other part of this is I know the boat hasn't been run in the last 2 years, and my guess is it hasn't been run more than once or twice in the last 10.

So my first question is, should I even put the boat in the lake, or am I just being foolish and risking disaster if I do so. Seems awful to have a new boat (my first ever) sitting in my driveway, but I suppose it would be worse to have to sink tons of money in to a boat that dies in the first week of ownership because I didn't replace a part.

My second question is, What do I need?!?! I feel pretty overwhelmed. I looked up the part I THINK I want (Impeller part from iboats) but I am not sure. The serial number on my engine is 2681521.

Besides the impeller itself, are there other parts I need to replace when I pull the lower unit off, or is that the only part I need to order?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I want to place my order, but I also want to make sure I get everything I need.

You should replace the impeller every other year.
You should also get the upper and lower water pump gaskets.

The impeller might be OK enough to pump water, but the blades do take a 'set' after sitting in one position for a long time. So it may not be as efficiently pumping as it could. The other issue is, the blades can become brittle after setting for so long, and can break off. Usually not a good thing!

For the price of an impeller and maybe a few gaskets, pump plate, etc, it's certainly better than risking thermonuclear annihilation of your powerhead and will definitely give you some peace of mind!

I don't think you'll find part diagrams at the iBoats store, but here's a few sites that have 'em:

www.boats.net www.crowleymarine.com www.mercruiserparts.com

This site has a lot of info for Old Mercs:

www.maxrules.com

And this place specializes in parts for our classic motors:

http://store.eastcoastmarineservice.com/Default.asp

Check the iBoats repairs FAQ section for much info on servicing ign, carbs, decarbonizing, etc etc etc. A wonderful resource of collective knowledge.

Your 100 is a great motor and you'll get a lot of satisfaction (and learn a lot) from wrenching on it yourself. Not to mention the money you won't be paying to an outboard mechanic! Have Fun!

Replacing your water pump would be highly recommended because of the down time,(just sitting around) impeller blades become brittle and loose there ability to function properly. For around 30 Dollars give or take will save you hundreds in the future, and as old as your motor is parts are hard to come by.Very nice Motor by the way.If you plan on changing this yourself make sure you follow the instructions. This is a fairly easy repair.A manual is a must for all your boating engine repairs etc. This site here is an exceptional site for trouble shooting help and answers. Happy Boating.....

Naw, tear it down and scatter it all over the yard, then come back begging for hhhheeellllllpppp ME like all the rest of the newbies.:D

Actually, lighten up. It's probably OK. If you want to keep track of it, rig a water pressure gauge. There should also be an overtemp switch that will buzz at you if it gets hot. If the tell tale stream is hot but not scorching at idle, it's probably OK.

I drop the LU every winter, take it to whatever shop can do any repairs needed, (skeg, seals, etc.) and while it's off open up the water pump and replace at least the impeller and gasket. If the base plate is scored, that and a couple more gaskets get replaced also. Housing and outlet seal are checked of course.

The impellers do take a set over time if they're idle. I've had a couple pump poorly but look OK except for the curl.
