Here's a question for the Computer gurus here. I have a small home network with three computers hooked to it. Recently a problem developed with my (BILLS) computer; when clicking "My Network Places" then "Entire Network" the computer will hang and somtimes lock up to the point it must be powered down and restarted. When my wife's computer (KARENS) is powered down this symptom does not exsist, and "My Network Places" on BILLS finds the other computers on the network. The third computer (PJS) seems to have the same problem as BILLS.
KARENS computer can share the resources on BILLS, however as long as KARENS is powered up BILLS cannot share resources or access the network. Internet access works on all computers all the time.
I've been unable to make any progress with Dell, and I've tried the fixes suggested by Microsoft support to no avail.
Any one have an idea?
Bill....

something is corrupt

go and update all of the drivers for the network cards on each machine...

go to device manager
pick the device
go into details and or advanced
click on update drivers

If you have put on the latest drivers, disable the network cards and then reboot, then renable them, then reboot. This will flush out any settings that are corrupt.

Put on the latest microsoft patches

Remove all the devices from the network and then put them back on, software wise.

Does KAREN's computer have a firewall running? Disable it temporarily to see if that makes any difference.
In all likelihood it is the driver or the network card on KAREN that is causing the problem. Also check to see if KAREN's network card is "enabled". I have seen XP computers disabling some network cards whenever it feels like it.
Also run scans for spyware/adware and viruses on all computers, you'd be surprised just how many problems they can cause.

Thanks for the replys. Apparently KARENS has a bad Ethernet card. Running ipconfig returns an IP address of 0.0.0.0. I've reloaded the software with no improvement. The next step is to replace the Ethernet card.
It's interesting because winipcfg returns an IP address of 192.168.1.100. KARENS can access anything on the network, but no one else can address her. KARENS show up in "my network places" but when trying to access her the other computers either "hang" or return a message "KARENS is not available".
I'll replace the card and see what happens next. I became distracted yesterday when the computer in the hangar apparantly crashed it's hard drive.
This is going to be fun, NOT!!
Bill.......
