Neutral safety switch problem

I'm replacing this in my 1994 200 johnson today. I don't have any continuity between the Solenoid post on the ignition switch and the small post on the solenoid, so for $16, I have to open up the remote control to test it anyways. My question is...the engine has been very hard starting and touchy with the controller lately. If this switch is "going bad," will it allow the engine to crank but prevent ignition? When I jumped directly from a known positive to the small ignition post, the engine fired up immediately.

Re: Neutral safety switch problem

The neutral switch will only prevent the starter solenoid from activating; it has no bearing on the ignition system. Click the thumbnail please.

Your problem could easily be the ignition switch itself.
