Neutral safety switch wiring

I have a 1974 15hp electric start Evinrude. The neutral safety switch has just given up and before I replace it I would like to be sure of the correct wiring. Currently it breaks the main supply to the starter motor i.e. it does not prevent the solenoid from working but does prevent the starter form turning. Should it be between the starter switch and solenoid instead? The wiring diagram in my Clymer manual doesn't show a solenoid at all and the one I have is not an Evinrude one so I suspect that all may not be as it should be! All help gratefully received!

Re: Neutral safety switch wiring

normally the neutral safety switch is wired to the small neg - terminal on the solenoid coil with one lead, and the other lead of the NS switch goes to ground.

Some solenoids have a case ground for the coil instead of having a negative coil terminal. When this is the case the safety switch is wired inline on the S wire from the ignition switch.

Most modern outboard have two small terminals on the solenoid. If you see a short ground wire from the small coil wire going to the block ground you know it was wired into the S terminal wire of the ignition switch. If the ground goes somewhere else then it's probably wire to the ground side.
